Kim So-wŏl (born August 6, 1902 in Kusŏng , P'yŏngan-pukto ; † December 24, 1934 in Kwaksan , P'yŏngan-pukto) was a Korean poet .
Life
Kim So-wŏl was born on August 6, 1902 in Kusŏng , P'yŏngan-pukto . He completed his education at the Paejae High School in Seoul and enrolled at the Tokyo University of Commerce in 1923 , but exmatriculated again in September of the same year after the great Kanto earthquake . His poet career officially began in 1920 when he published five poems. He was strongly influenced by Kim Ŏk and left a life's work consisting of approx. 270 poems, 17 of which were translated. He died on December 24, 1934 in Kwaksan, the homeland of his ancestors.
Kim was a major contributor to early Korean poetry. In the 1920s, Korean literary circles, built on the individual publications of their members, saw the introduction of European literature and the birth of 'modern poetry' in the three-verse tradition. During this fertile period, Kim produced poetry inspired by folk songs, rooted in traditional rhythms as well as Korean folk sentiments. His style was similar to that of his predecessors Kim Ŏk and Chu Yo-han , although the poet also paved the way to new dimensions in poetics and technique during his long and creative career.
