Kim Song Gun is also called the "painter of the waves" because he almost exclusively paints sea and river scenes with thundering waters. Although the depictions are on the one hand very realistic, the painter achieves a subtle, modern form through the brutality of the waves on the other of abstraction. One of his wave paintings received international attention because it was featured in the background of the official photo of Bill Clinton's state visit to Kim Jong-il in 2009.
