Kimbal Musk (born September 20, 1972 in Pretoria ) is a Canadian-American entrepreneur and restaurateur from South Africa . He is the brother of the well-known entrepreneur Elon Musk . He owns multiple corporate and non-profit organizations and is a board member of SpaceX and Tesla, Inc.

biography

Musk grew up in South Africa with his brother Elon and sister Tosca. His mother, Maye Musk , was a prominent model and nutritionist, and his father was a mechanical engineer. After graduating from high school in Pretoria, Musk immigrated to live with his brother in Kingston , Canada . There he enrolled at university to get a degree in business administration from Queen's University . During this time, Musk initially worked at Scotiabank . He graduated in 1995.

Musk's first venture was a painting business with College Pro Painters in 1995, the same year he and older brother Elon started their second company, Zip2 . Zip2 was an online city guide that provided content for the new online versions of the New York Times and Chicago Tribune newspapers . The company was sold to Compaq in 1999 for $ 307 million . The brothers invested the money in various technology companies. Kimbal Musk then went to New York City and trained as a chef.

He founded his first restaurant in Boulder , Colorado in 2004 . Today he owns The Kitchen Restaurant Group , a group of community restaurants with alternative concepts in several US cities. He is the co-founder and chairman of Big Green , a non-profit that has built hundreds of outdoor classrooms called "Learning Gardens" in school playgrounds across the United States. Musk is also the co-founder and chairman of Square Roots , a Brooklyn urban farming company that grows food in hydroponic, covered, and air-conditioned shipping containers. He was also a co-founder of the search engine OneRiot , which was taken over by Walmart in 2011 . Musk currently serves on the boards of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX . He is also a significant shareholder in Tesla.

Musk married Jen Lewin , with whom he founded The Kitchen. The couple have two children but later divorced. In April 2018, he married Christiana Wyly , an environmental activist and the daughter of entrepreneur Sam Wyly .
