The Hamburg children's book house in the Altona Museum is a place where original illustrations from the field of children's and youth literature can be seen. Both the works of well-known book artists and illustrators as well as the sketches and drafts that were necessary to create the final illustration are shown .

The workshops and workshops for children and adults, which are regularly carried out by book artists, illustrators and authors, are dedicated to the aspect of making book culture tangible. A further training program for learning guides and educators as well as trainees, students and volunteers, for example for philosophizing with children, is offered to accompany the respective exhibitions. The Hamburg Children's Book Days take place regularly in spring. From practice for practice, professionals provide useful information on the topic of children's books in workshops and lectures. The regular accompanying events of the children's book house also include readings, lectures and book presentations.

history

The children's book house was opened in November 2005 and is an independent institution in the Altona Museum. The foundation was initiated back in 2004 by the non-profit Hamburg association “Forum für Bilder-Buch-Kultur eV”, which is also the sponsor of the children's book house. Supporters include the Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media, the Altonaer Museum , the Bijou Brigitte Foundation, the MARITIM FOUNDATION Hermann & Milena Ebel, Euler Hermes Germany (branch of Euler Hermes SA), Carlsen Verlag , Carl-Toepfer- Foundation, Dorothea and Martha Sprenger Foundation, Wunderbär / Christian Langer, HörbucHHamburg as well as bookbindery Karen Begemann and Paperlux GmbH.

Since 2018, the Bodo Röhr Foundation and the Ulli & Uwe Kai Foundation have also been among the sponsors of the children's book house.

The children's book house is an actor in promoting reading in Hamburg . The director of the children's book house is the art historian Dr. Dagmar Gausmann-Läpple. The patron was Kirsten Boie . Sabine Wilharm has been the godmother of the children's book house since 2011 . Due to renovation work in the Altona Museum , the children's book house was a guest in the Heine House on Elbchaussee from January 1, 2013 to February 28, 2013 .

program

The focus of the children's book house's program is on the exhibitions of original illustrations from children's and young people's books. Workshops and book workshops are held around the exhibitions. These workshops and workshops are aimed primarily at children and young people, school classes, and adults who work with children.

Another programmatic focus is the promotion and networking of the Hamburg book artist scene through advanced training projects and the provision of a forum for book art.
