Company history

The company was founded in the sixties by Albert Bert and his daughter-in-law Rose Claeys-Vereecke with initially only one cinema in Harelbeke . In the following years they opened cinemas in Hasselt , Kortrijk , Gent and Liège . In 1988 they opened their first multiplex cinema , the Kinepolis Brussels, which has 25 halls and, according to their own account, is the first “megaplex” in the world.

The groups Bert and Claeys merged in 1997 to form one group, the Kinepolis Group NV . In 1998 the company went public and in the same year opened its first two cinemas outside Belgium, in Madrid and Paris . Expansion into Switzerland followed in 2000 with the only location so far. Also only one location was realized in Poland in 2001, which has been operated by IT International Theaters (ITIT) since January 2007.

In 1999 the Kinepolis Group acquired 30% of the shares in the German cinema chain Cinemaxx . At the beginning of 2004 the participation quota was still 25% and fell to 12.61% due to a capital increase in October 2004. The investment was sold to H + Z Beteiligungs GmbH in January 2009 .
