King code

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

King-Code is a cooperation project of two Berlin schools to visit the Baptist preacher Martin Luther King jr. in September 1964 in Berlin. Pupils from the Ernst Reuter secondary school (Wedding) and the Rosa Luxemburg grammar school (Pankow) went on a search for clues and met contemporary witnesses . The project was coordinated by the Berlin-Brandenburg Community Youth Service.

Martin Luther King (1964)

description

Students from both schools worked together to search for traces of Martin Luther King during his visit to Berlin. At that time King had traveled unannounced from West to East Berlin; The trigger was that 14 hours earlier, GDR border guards shot at and seriously injured Michael Meyer, who was fleeing over the Berlin Wall . In East Berlin, King criticized "dividing walls of hostility". For this purpose, the students researched libraries, archives and interviewed contemporary witnesses of King's visit in 1964. On a website they presented a virtual tour that followed in King's footsteps during his visit to Berlin. In addition, the students worked on a traveling exhibition that went through Berlin and Brandenburg schools. In September 2014 the exhibition was on public display in the Marienkirche (Berlin-Mitte) .

Creation of the King Code project

“50 years after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. his words remain relevant than ever. This became clear during the radio interview of the King-Code students with Sebastian Noß from 98.2 Radio Paradiso. Before that, the students had the speech Dr. Kings from 1963 and started talking to each other in the rooms of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium. The students reported on their experiences with discrimination & racism in everyday life and at school, but also talked about their dreams and wishes in relation to Dr. King. The radio reports can be heard on the project homepage. "

The students met with Michael Meyer, a jockey who fled across the death strip from East to West Berlin in September 1964 and who received 300 shots. They interviewed contemporary witnesses from the church sector, who gave them information about the circumstances under which Martin Luther King was able to preach sermons in two churches in the eastern part of Berlin. In Werdau , Thuringia , students from the project visited a Martin Luther King Center. In private, church and radio archives, they were able to evaluate films and sound recordings that were difficult to access and, in some cases, not known beforehand.
