Kingston is a small town in the Queenstown-Lakes District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located at the southern end of Lake Wakatipu , around 34 km south of Queenstown and around 50 km northeast of Lumsden .
history
Kingston originated on the site of the Māori settlement Takerehaka . Later, the settlement site was after on the goldfields Otago s supervising police commissioner St. John Branigan " St Johns called". The current name was probably given by Irish immigrants to a place in Ireland .

In the 2013 census, the town had 237 inhabitants, 19.7% more than in the 2006 census.

Kingston is connected to the New Zealand road system via the New Zealand State Highway 6 , which runs past to the east .
Rail transport
From there, a railway line leads to Fairlight Station, 10 km to the south .
Shipping
The place has a pier at the northwest end.
tourism
The place gave its name to today's Kingston Flyer tourist train . This runs on a 14 km long section of the former Kingston Branch branch line , which was in operation from 1878 to 1979.
