Kinondoni is a district (Municipal Council) in the Tanzanian region of Dar es Salaam . It borders the Indian Ocean to the northeast, the Ilala district to the south and the Pwani region to the west .

Kinondoni is the northernmost of the three districts of Dar es Salaam, with an area of 531 square kilometers it has 1,775,049 inhabitants (as of 2012). The district also includes small offshore islands in the Indian Ocean, the largest of which are Bongoyo and Mbudya .
The climate is tropical, which means that it is hot and humid all year round. It is particularly hot in the months of October to March, from May to August it is a little cooler. There are two rainy seasons. Short rain showers fall from October to December, heavy rainfall from March to May.

populationThe number of residents of the district increased from 1,083,913 in 2002 to 1,775,049 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of 4.9 percent and means that the population will double every 14 years if the growth remains the same. Of those over five, nearly sixty percent spoke Swahili and a third spoke Swahili and English. The proportion of illiterate people was five percent (as of 2012). Facilities and services |
- Education: 121 primary schools and 72 secondary schools are available for training young people. 77 of the primary schools are state-run and 44 are private, of the secondary schools 22 are state-run and 50 are private (as of 2019). In the district is the Open University of Tanzania and three private universities.
- Health: Kinondoni had fifteen hospitals, six health centers and 176 pharmacies in 2019.
- Water: 73 percent of the water is supplied by the water authority of the city of Dar es Salaam (as of 2019).
Economy and Infrastructure
Of the working population, 61 percent are employed in the private sector, 35 percent are self-employed and 4 percent are employed in the public sector. The most important branches of the economy are trade and industry. They make up 80 percent of the regional economic output and employ 90 percent of the workforce. The inhabitants make a small living from fishing, animal husbandry, horticulture and tourism.
- Commerce: In 2018 there were over 30,000 commercial establishments in the district.
- Industry: There are predominantly small industrial and commercial enterprises; of the total of 1337 companies, around 200 were classified as medium or large in 2018.
- Fishing: The district has 143 kilometers of coastline on the Indian Ocean. 3000 fishermen in 500 boats caught 4000 tons of fish (as of 2018).
- Tourism: The main attraction for tourism are the sandy beaches on the Indian Ocean, especially at Msasani.
- Roads: Of the 1,500 kilometers of roads in 2018, around 140 kilometers were asphalt, 380 were gravel and almost 1,000 kilometers were dirt roads. Two major Dar es Salaam exit roads run through the district. Mororgoro Road runs west as the T1 national road to Morogoro and on to Mbeya and Zambia . The Bagamoyo Road leads northwest along the coast to Bagamoyo .
Nature reserves, sights
- Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve: The two largest islands in the Dar Es Salaam Marine Reserve are Bongoyo and Mbudya. Various bird species live in this area, including the rare crab palm thief and sea turtles. Underwater there are seagrass meadows with seahorses and coral reefs.
