history

The Löwitzer church was a branch church of the Rathebur church until 1560 , then it was subordinate to the Putzar church and finally came back to the Rathebur church in 1716. Margarethe von Krassow, widow of the governor Klaus von Schwerin (1567-1612), had the Löwitzer church built from scratch in 1620.

In 1990 the copper roofing of the tower was renewed. Necessary renovation work on the tower and the interior has not yet been completed.

graveyard

The cemetery is surrounded by a brick churchyard wall that was built in the last third of the 19th century. Between the pillars there are wide plastered fields with ornamental panels in which the diamond is shown as the coat of arms of the von Schwerin family. Along with the wall, a funeral chapel was built diagonally into the wall in the northwest corner of the cemetery . This is designed as a plastered brick building with stone-visible architectural elements. A round arch is located above the arched portal on the cemetery side of the gable frieze on consoles.

To the east of the church is the monumental burial place of the von Schwerin-Löwitz family directly on the cemetery wall. It was built from 1890 to 1910 on behalf of Hans von Schwerin-Löwitz . The grave complex is a pedestal that can be reached via four wide steps, on which the grave slabs for Hans von Schwerin-Löwitz and his wife Marie, née von Gerstenberg, are located. The podium, open to the west, is surrounded by a three-sided wall bench. The bench is closed off by two arms, each with a relief of a kneeling angel. A statue of the blessing Jesus Christ after Bertel Thorvaldsen stands in a round arch niche . Behind the figure's head there is a large round window with stained glass. On both sides of the niche there are blinding columns, each with a relief of a pen. In the triangular gable above the niche there is a plaque with the Christ monogram . To the side of the gable are two vases.

After the fall of the Wall, the grave slabs of the destroyed hereditary burial were fetched from Sophienhof and placed in the tomb.
