The Neukirchen Church (also: Church in Neukirchen ; original: New Church ) is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Neukirchen , Steinbergkirche . Together with the St. Nicolai Church in Groß- Quern, it belongs to the Quern-Neukirchen parish . The church building is one of the cultural monuments of the Steinbergkirche community . Parts of the church furnishings and the surrounding cemetery were also entered.

Construction and history

Duke Hans the Younger , lord of the divided duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg , planned in his duchy around Glücksburg Castle the construction of his own Baltic port at the exit of the Flensburg Fjord . For this he settled workers there. For these, the construction of a church began in 1621. A year later the church, which was simply called the "New Church", was consecrated. The name of the church was subsequently transferred to the parish and today's Steinbergkirchner district of Neukirchen. A few years earlier, a church of the same type had been built on the opposite side of the fjord, on the Kekenis peninsula, which also belongs to Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . The brick church in Neukirchen consists of a flat-roofed nave, a rectangular choir and a massive west tower. In 1793 the vestibule was added. In 1837 the tower was plastered with cement.

Winged altar from 1623

The age of the wing dates from 1623 and shows in the middle field an oil painting scene and twelve carved figures of Jesus Christ, John the Baptist , Paul and nine apostles. The Renaissance pulpit from 1620 is the work of the Sonderburger carver Nils Taxsen and is assigned to the Ringeringk School . It shows eight scenes from the life of Christ in the balustrade of the pulpit and staircase. Originally created for the chapel of Glücksburg Castle , it was moved to Neukirchen in 1717 in connection with the redesign of the chapel. The triumphal cross group in the choir arch and the wooden cover of the baptismal font were donated to the church in the 17th century. For historical, artistic and urban planning reasons and because it shapes the cultural landscape, the church was placed under monument protection. At the same time, the church furnishings, the churchyard, the churchyard gate, the preserved field stone wall (or the embankment wall) and the rows of linden trees were placed under monument protection. In 2018, the church and the surrounding cemetery were used as filming locations for the episode Borowski and the house by the sea in the crime film series Tatort .

graveyard

In 2011, a memorial stone to Kapitänleutnant Asmus Jepsen, a victim of the Nazi naval justice in Flensburg, was erected in the cemetery of honor in the churchyard. Asmus Jepsen last lived with his family in Neukirchen. On May 6, 1945, the lieutenant captain was executed as a deserter at the Twedter Feld firing range near Mürwik.

Pastors

Nicolaus Oest was pastor in Neukirchen from 1744 until his death in 1798.
