Saanen Church

The Saanen Church is the Reformed village church of Saanen , Canton Bern , Switzerland .

It is first mentioned in a document in 1228 , was consecrated to Saint Mauritius in the Middle Ages and was rebuilt in late Gothic style from 1444 to 1447 . The wall paintings in the choir , created around 1470, depict scenes from the Old Testament , the life of Mary and the legend of Saint Mauritius and the Theban Legion .

The landmark of the church is the striking tower with a hexagonal roof and wooden bell chamber . The church plays an important role in the annual Menuhin Festival Gstaad and the winter festival Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad .

The theologian Wilhelm Hadorn (1869–1929) worked as a reformed pastor in Saanen at a young age .
