history

The first wooden church in Pernå was probably built around 1300. 1398 the community in a letter from Pope Boniface IX. invited to participate in renovating the old church or building a new church. The exact date of construction of today's church is unknown, but based on stylistic features and dendrochronological results it can be assumed that the church was built in the first half of the 15th century. Apparently the sacristy was completed as the first phase of construction after 1410, the rest of the church is believed to have been built around 1440. Clear similarities with other medieval stone churches in eastern Uusimaa indicate that the church of Pernå was built by the so-called “Master of Pernå”, the same builder who also built the cathedral of Porvoo , the Church of St. Lawrence in Vantaa and the churches von Sipoo , Pyhtää and Vehkalahti .
