Sanda Church
The Church of Sanda ( Swedish Sanda kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It is the parish church of the parish (swed. Församling ) Sanda, Västergarn och Mästerby and belongs to the diocese of Visby .
location
The church is located a few kilometers inland from the west coast, 24 km south of Visby as the crow flies and 5 km north of Klintehamn near the village of Sanda.
Church building
The current church consists of a steeple from the middle of the 13th century, a nave from around 1300 and a choir from the middle of the 14th century. A few ornamental stones in the southern wall show that there was a church here in front of today's church, the stones of which were reused in the new church. The church was last restored in 1956, removing the gallery organ and relocating the organ to the space under the tower.
The inventory items of the church include a. a sandstone baptismal font from the second half of the 12th century attributed to Byzantios and a triumphal cross from the middle of the 13th century. A bell hangs in the north tower portal, the year of which was made in 1493 as a runic inscription .
The picture stone
At the beginning of the 20th century an older type of picture stone (SHM 13127) was found in the church cemetery in Sanda . About 50 years later, during the restoration of the church, the lower part of the same stone came to light. The assembled stone is now in Gotland's Fornsal in Visby . The stone with a height of 3.3 m is the largest of the older picture stones known to date. It shows the size of the Vendelzeit monuments.
