It is located in the small town of Tingstäde a little north of the center of the Swedish island of Gotland , 20 km northeast of Visby .

It used to belong to the parish of Tingstäde and is one of the largest medieval country churches on the island. It is visible from afar; the 55 m high tower serves as a maritime mark, although the church is 10 km from the nearest coast. Conversely, after climbing the tower, with good visibility, you can see the sea both in the east and in the west.

The oldest parts of the church date from around 1200, as can be deduced from the sculptures made by the master Calcarius .

Church building

The nave from the late 12th century was originally provided with a choir with an apse. Its portal has been preserved as the entrance to the sacristy . The choir with sacristy was replaced by a larger new building in the 13th century. The west portal is said to have imitated a portal from Visby Cathedral . The church has medieval paintings from the 14th century on the walls of the tower chamber. These paintings were completed at the beginning of the 18th century with a canopy based on a medieval model.

Murals

Wall paintings from the Middle Ages can be found in the church . You are one of the examples of such on Gotland.

inventory

The font from the 12th century was created by the master Majestatis . In addition to the other decorations, a triumphal crucifix from the first half of the 14th century, created by the so-called Tingstädemeister , should be mentioned. The altar panel was painted by Johan Weller in 1780 .

Asylum Church

Tingstäde was one of three asylum churches on Gotland (next to Atlingbo in the central part and Fardhem in the southern part of the island). Here, a suspect was given protection for 40 days while the negotiations took place. This custom probably arose to prevent the blood revenge from spreading across the island.

Others

In 2003, the mobile phone company 3GIS installed a base station for 3G telephony in the church tower.
