The Church of Tjärstad ( Swedish Tjärstads kyrka ) is a church of the parish Rimforsa the Diocese of Linköping and is located in the municipality of Kinda province Östergötland .

history

Before the level of the Åsunden lake system was lowered by the construction of the Kinda Canal at the beginning of the 19th century , the church was located on the bank of the important sea route between Linköping and Gamleby (formerly Västervik ). In their place was a round church ( Swedish rundkyrka ) from the late 12th century until the end of the 18th century. It looked like the old church in Vårdsberg . There was a wooden tower above her round house and to the north of her was a stack of bells .

Since the old round church became too small due to the growth of the community, a choir was added in 1733. Between 1775 and 1778 the old round church was torn down and the present church was built in its place. This building, built in the style of a hall church , has an east-west orientation and consists of natural stone and bricks, its barrel vault is clad with wood. A church tower was added on the west side in 1794–1795. In the east there is a just completed choir the same width as the nave. The sacristy is located in an extension on the north side .

inventory

The pulpit and baptismal font of the old round church have been preserved. They date from the end of the 17th century and were made by Henrik Werner and Petter Bengtsson Holm. The altarpiece from 1781 was a gift from Reichsrat Melker Falkenberg and depicts Jesus in the Garden of Getsemani as a motif . It was created by Wilhelm Fredrik Gottman. An older reredos from 1752 shows the crucifixion of Jesus.
