Väskinde Church

The church of Väskinde is a country church that belongs to the parish (Swedish Församling ) Väskinde in the diocese of Visby . It is located in Väskinde inland on the Swedish island of Gotland , 9.5 km northeast of Visby and 12 km southwest of Tingstäde.

Church building

The church consists of a rectangular nave with a steeple in the west and a narrower, straight choir in the east. The building material is mainly limestone. The entrances are on the north side of the tower and on the south side of the choir and nave. In the northeast corner of the nave there are remains of an earlier apse <nowki /> church from the late 12th century. In the second half of the 13th century a major renovation began with the construction of today's choir. The nave and tower were added around 1300. In the south wall of the tower there are two recessed rooms, the prayer chamber with hagioscope and the sacristy. The church has white plastered facades. The nave and the choir are lower by a steep gable roof covered. The tower, which is said to have been taller, has side galleries to the north and south and a short octagonal spire with sound holes. The tower portal is simple and undecorated, while the choir portal is richly decorated with sculptures. The nave's only light inlet is a large tracery window in the south. The west wall of the tower is also broken through by an ogival tracery window. The choir receives light from a group of three windows in the east. From the inside the nave is covered by two cross vaults. The choir and the tower room also have cross vaults. There are frescoes from four periods, from the middle of the 13th century to the beginning of the 16th century. The paintings were brought out during the restoration of the architect Erik Fant in 1953.

Furnishing

Majesty's baptismal font
  • The baptismal font stands on a stone pedestal in the rear of the church under the arched tower . It was carved by the master stonemason Majestatis in the mid-12th century. The reliefs on the baptismal font depict Christ as ruler of the world, but also scenes from Jesus' childhood. The colors on the font were painted in the 18th century.
  • The triumphal cross is from around 1240.
  • In the north choir wall there is a sacrament house from the 13th century. Its stone surrounds have sculpted images of Saint Catherine and Saint Jacobus the Elder .
  • Today's organ was built in 2000 by Walter Thür Orgelbyggeri from Torshälla. The earlier organ was built in 1954 by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri from Gammelstad.
