The fortified church

The Evangelical Lutheran fortified church is in the Utendorf community on a mountain in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

history

The nave was built on the mighty keep of the former castle and the keep was converted into a church tower . In the 14th and 15th centuries, the farmers built the so-called Gaden in the castle courtyard , only one of which has been preserved through overbuilding. Pastors never lived in the village. They came from Walldorf or Kühndorf to look after the faithful here.

In 1821 the rebuilding of the church brought about a change. The choir on the tower floor was walled up, the nave was lengthened and two galleries were built in. The tower now also received the bell floor . The design of the rooms was adapted to the times. The predella found from 1653 was given its new place after the restoration.

The organ was installed from 1821 to 1824 and restored in 2011.

Theft of the church treasure

The church treasure was stolen during the 2nd Markgräfler War in 1554 . Several silver chalices , a monstrance from Catholic times and chasubles with gold interlacing with a total value of 100 guilders were stolen.
