Kirknewton is a village in the east of the Scottish Council Area West Lothian or in the traditional county of Edinburghshire . It is located about five kilometers southeast of Livingston and 16 kilometers southwest of central Edinburgh near the western flank of the Pentland Hills .

history

Around 1690, Kirknewton House was the earliest of three mansions in the area. In the 1830s, William Henry Playfair redesigned the building. Hill House was built in the later 18th century. Ormiston House was built in 1851 to a design by David Bryce .

In 1750 a church was built in Kirknewton. The Kirknewton Parish Church was revised 1,872th In the second half of the 19th century, the village developed with a quarry and the extraction of oil shale . During the Second World War , RAF Kirknewton airfield was established.

The B7031 forms part of Kirknewton's main street. It connects the town within a few kilometers to the north with the A71 (Edinburgh– Irvine ) and in the south with the A70 (Edinburgh– Ayr ). With the Kirknewton station , the Caledonian Railway connected the village to the rail network as early as the 19th century. The station is still in operation today.
