Tadamitsu Kishimoto
Tadamitsu Kishimoto ( Japanese 岸 本 忠 三 , Kishimoto Tadamitsu ; born May 7, 1939 in Tondabayashi , Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese immunologist . He discovered interleukin-6 , an important messenger substance of the immune system, and distinguished himself through significant achievements in the field of signal transduction, ie the processing of signals in cells.
Interleukin-6 plays an important role in communication between different cells of the immune system. A dysregulation of interleukin release is related to certain immune and tumor diseases. Kishimoto examined interleukin-6, its receptor and the following signal cascade (STAT). This work contributed significantly to the understanding of cytokines in general and their mode of action.
Kishimoto not only made important contributions to basic research, but was also able to achieve specific clinical-therapeutic advances through the development of antibodies against interleukin receptors, ie some drugs that are used in certain immune and tumor diseases can be traced back to his research.
