Kishwer Falkner, Baroness Falkner of Margravine , née Khan (born March 9, 1955 in Pakistan ), is a British politician ( Liberal Democrats ) and life peer .

life and career

Falkner was born in Pakistan as Kishwer Khan. She attended St Joseph's Convent School , a monastery school, in Karachi . After previously living and working in the Middle East , she moved to the UK in the late 1970s . In 1983 she became a British citizen . She studied at the London School of Economics , where she earned a Bachelor of Economics in "International Relations". At the University of Kent closed it with a Master of Arts in the subject "International Relations and European Studies" ( International Relations and European Studies ) from.

In the mid-1980s she joined the Liberal Democrats and worked for them in various offices until 1999. From 1999 to 2001 she was a member of the Liberal Democrat Federal Policy Committee and from 2000 to 2004 Chair of the Policy Committee of the Liberal Democrats in London . In the 2001 general election, she ran as a promising parliamentary candidate for the constituency of Kensington and Chelsea and achieved the highest percentage of ethnic minority votes for the Liberal Democrats in London. In 2004 she ran as a candidate for the European Parliament .

For many years, Kishwer was the Liberal Democrat's “leading figure” on international and European affairs. She was jointly responsible for large areas of party politics in relation to the European Union and coordinated joint responses of the European liberals, in particular with regard to the position of Europe in the world. Kishwer also worked for the Commonwealth Secretariat , where she focused on globalization , democracy and development aid. From 1999 to 2003 she was Chief Program Director of the Political Affairs Division .

In February 2008 she was appointed Chancellor of the University of Northampton . She was the chief executive officer of Students Partnership Worldwide . It is an international charity organization that cares for the needs of young people in Africa and Asia .

She is currently (November 2011) the Non-Executive Director of the Hyde Group Ltd housing company . She is president ( chairman ) of the housing association Hyde Southbank Homes Ltd and member of the Hyde Group Remuneration and Appointments Committee . She is also member of the Trusteeship Council ( trustee ) of Hyde Plus and the Hampden Educational Trust , and a member of the Board of Directors ( Council ) of the St George's House of Windsor Castle and a member of the Executive Board ( Board ) of the Coexistence Trust .

Membership in the House of Lords

Falkner was named a Life Peer on June 2, 2004, with the title Baroness Falkner of Margravine , of Barons Court in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It was officially introduced into the House of Lords on June 15, 2004 . She gave her inaugural address on June 25, 2004.

On the website of the House of Lords, she lists European politics, international relations, political Islam, “cultural diversity and equality”, youth politics, constitutional questions , government questions and the topic of transition as topics of political interest .

From 2004 to 2005 she was the liberal democratic spokesperson for the Home Office , from 2005 to 2006 for communities and local government , from 2007 to 2008 for children, schools and families ( Children, Schools and Families ) and from 2008 to 2009 for Justice. From 2009 to 2010 she was both spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and again for the Home Office.

In 2005, Falkner became the first Muslim woman in the history of the British Parliament to become a Speaker for Communities and Local Government . She also served on committees dealing with international development assistance, defense policy and legal advice. She also speaks on the subject of international terrorism . In 2005 she was part of a task force led by British Prime Minister Tony Blair on the threat of Islamist extremism .

Falkner is the Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party Committee on International Affairs (FCO).

Falkner spoke up on the Iraq war , the humanitarian situation in Bangladesh , the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and the Prevention of Terrorism Bill . Falkner regularly attends meetings of the House of Lords. Your attendance figures have been consistently in the upper range since 2004.

Working in public

In the election campaign before the general election in 2010 , she got involved with Navnit Dholakia , among others .

In March 2011 she criticized Sayeeda Warsi, Baroness Warsi , who spoke out against a planned change in the electoral law. Falkner disagreed with Warsi's view that the new suffrage would strengthen the BNP .

Falkner traveled to Israel and the Palestinian Territories in July 2011 with a non-partisan group of British MPs . Contrary to the official policy of the Cameron administration, several participants, including falconers, met with Ismail Haniyeh . She then spoke of the need for the meeting after the agreement between Hamas and Fatah .

She had previously visited this region in October 2009 as part of an initiative by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation . She gave a lecture on whether liberalism can be social. She also met with several politicians and representatives of NGOs .

In September 2011 she participated in the Yaroslavl Global Policy Forum (GPF). In an interview on the occasion of this event, Falkner praised the organization and the process, but said that there should be more room for discussion. She also talked about the fact that Kosovo's independence should have waited some time and that she supported the continued deployment of United Nations peacekeeping forces. She also spoke about the consequences of the attacks in Norway . She described the work of secret services as the key to getting into extremist groups and preventing further such acts.

Falkner was a Fellow of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University .
