Athletic career

Klaus Bittner's career in GDR-wide league football began in the 1977/78 season with four point matches in the second-rate GDR league for the company sports community (BSG) Chemie Leipzig . 1978/79 he played in the first half of the season only for the 2nd team in the third-rate district league . For the second half of the season he moved to the upper division chemistry Böhlen, where he was only used in the junior division. At the end of the season, Böhlen was relegated to the GDR league, and Bittner became a regular at Chemie Böhlen in the 1979/80 season with 20 appearances in 22 league games and nine goals. With a second place in the promotion round, the team achieved immediate promotion. Bittner was involved with seven appearances in the eight promotion games and two goals. In the following league season 1980/81 Bittner was used in 25 of the 26 point games and scored one goal, but was only fourteen times in the starting eleven as a midfielder. Relegation could not be achieved again, and Chemie Böhlen had to compete in the GDR league again in 1981/82. This time, too, the immediate resurgence succeeded, in which Bittner had a share in 18 league games with one goal and four promotion games with one goal. His second league season turned out to be more successful for Bittner, as in his 24 league appearances he was only five substitutes this time, and this time he scored five goals. In the end, however, he had to relegate from the league for the second time.

Then Bittner moved to the upper division Wismut Aue. There he was used from the 6th match day of the 1983/84 season on regularly as a 1.65 m tall striker. By the end of April he had made 21 appearances and scored one goal. In May 1984 he was drafted into the National People's Army for 18 months . For the second half of the 1985/86 season Bittner Wismut Aue was available again, but was only used as a substitute in ten league games in which he scored one goal. In the following three seasons he was a regular player in the Auer Oberliga team until 1989. As a striker, he missed a total of only four point games and scored 16 goals. It was typical for him, however, that he was usually substituted at the end of the second half. In 1987 he was Wismut Aue's top scorer with eight goals together with Harald Mothes . 1987 Wismut Aue played four games in the UEFA Cup against Valur Reykjavík (0-0, 1: 1) and KS Flamurtari Vlora (1-0, 0-2), in which Bittner was used as a winger. Bittner played his last games for Wismut Aue in the 1989/90 season. In the first half of the season he was used in all thirteen league games and was then used twice as a substitute in March 1990.

In the same month Bittner moved to the GDR league club BSG dkk Scharfenstein-Krumhermersdorf . There he played the remaining thirteen league games by the end of the season and scored two goals. After the descent of the BSG dkk, Bittner joined the FSV Wismut Gera in the 1990/91 season , which also played in the second-class league, after the turnaround as the NOFV league. There Bittner was used 15 times in the 30 point games. From 1991/92 the league was only third class and the 32-year-old Klaus Bittner did not return to the higher division. In 13 seasons he had played 169 league games with 24 goals, four European Cup games, 70 GDR league games with 16 goals and eleven promotion games with three goals.
