Klaus F. Rabe

Klaus Friedrich Rabe (born November 23, 1957 in Neuss ) is a German scientist and doctor specializing in internal medicine , allergology and pulmonology .

Career

Klaus Rabe studied medicine at the University of Hamburg and received his training at the Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg , the University Clinic Eppendorf and the Großhansdorf Hospital . After a research stay at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London, he accepted a professorship at Leiden University in 1998 . There he headed the pulmonology department and later the medical faculty.

In 2010, Rabe took over the position of Medical Director and Medical Managing Director at the Großhansdorf Hospital . At the same time he received a W3 endowed professorship for internal medicine / pneumology at the University of Kiel .

Klaus Rabe is the brother of the physicist Jürgen P. Rabe .

In 2019 Rabe was awarded the Balzan Prize .

Scientific activities

Rabe is co-editor of a number of medical and scientific journals. He is also involved in specialist pulmonary associations: from 2011–2012 he was President of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), and since 2017 he has been President of the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP).

Rabe's research interests lie in clinical studies in the field of the widespread diseases asthma and COPD as well as the mechanisms of airway inflammation and endoscopic staging in lung cancer . He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles. One of the most influential essays is a 2007 summary of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), cited more than 3,000 times according to the Web of Science .

Since 2011 Rabe has been a board member of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and director of the DZL network of sites Airway Research Center North (ARCN).
