Jürgen P. Rabe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen P. Rabe (born November 20, 1955 in Neuss ) is a German physicist , materials scientist and nanoscientist.

Life

Rabe studied physics and mathematics at RWTH Aachen University , obtained a physics diploma in 1981 with a thesis on semiconductor optics under Peter Grosse and received his doctorate in 1984 at the physics department of the Technical University of Munich under Erich Sackmann on a topic on the biophysics of model membranes.

He continued his first work on scanning tunneling microscopy on molecular monolayers at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San José (1984–1986) at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Gerhard Wegner 's department. In 1992 he submitted a habilitation thesis on this subject and became professor of physical chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. Since 1994 he has been a full professor for experimental physics with a focus on macromolecules and supramolecular systems at the Institute for Physics at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Rabe is Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and External Member of the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam-Golm, as well as Founding Director of the Integrative Research Institute for the Sciences IRIS Adlershof at Humboldt University. He was dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences I, chairman of the council of Humboldt University and visiting professor at the Materials Department at ETH Zurich and at the Department of Chemistry at Princeton University .

Jürgen P. Rabe is the brother of the physician Klaus F. Rabe and cousin of the statistician Sophia Rabe-Hesketh .

Rabe is internationally known for his fundamental tunnel microscopy work on the structure, dynamics and electronic properties of self-organized molecular systems at solid-liquid interfaces. Building on this, he developed concepts for a workbench based on scanning probe microscopes , light and molecularly modified graphite surfaces for the manipulation of individual macromolecules and supramolecular systems, with which the structure and dynamics of molecular systems with mechanical, electronic, optical and (bio) chemical properties from molecular to correlate to macroscopic length and time scales. This led to the development of prototypical, quasi 1- and 2-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid systems based on opto-electronically active molecular and graphene- based nanopores. In collaborative and interdisciplinary projects, Rabe has contributed to the development of new functional materials, including dendronized and conjugated polymers , multivalent biopolymer complexes , ultra-thin films of conjugated molecules, supramolecular polymers and helical nanofilaments, nanographenes, 2D materials and mixed 2D / 3D heterostructures.
