Premises of modern political thinking ” . This comprehensive habilitation thesis, which traces the genesis of the state from early Judaism through antiquity and the Middle Ages to modern times , was described by Herfried Münkler in the FAZ as a "[true] foray into the history of the West ".

Klaus Roth had since 2006 a visiting professor of Political Ideas held on OSI, since the retirement of Gerhard Göhler had not been occupied. However, the visiting professorship was no longer extended for the 2009 summer semester. A student initiative demanded that Roth be offered a professorship again - with success. Since the summer semester 2010, Roth has been teaching at the Otto Suhr Institute again.
