Klaus Roth (folklorist)

Klaus Roth (born November 17, 1939 in Hamburg ) is a German folklorist .

Life

Between 1960 and 1969 , Roth studied English , Geography , Slavonic and Folklore at the Universities of Hamburg , Freiburg im Breisgau , Aberdeen and Indiana University , where he graduated with an MA in American Folklore in the last year of his studies. From 1970 to 1973 he worked as a high school teacher. In 1975 he did his doctorate at the University of Freiburg with Lutz Röhrich with the dissertation "Adultery swindles in song form. An investigation into the German and English-language swank ballad" . A year later he became a research assistant at the folklore seminar at the University of Münster . From 1982 he was an associate professor at the Institute for Folklore / European Ethnology at the University of Munich . In 1988 and 1991 he was visiting professor in the Department of Anthropology at Berkeley University . Since 2004 he has been a retired professor at Munich University .

His main research interests include narrative research , folklore of Southeast Europe and intercultural communication .

Since 1993 he has been co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Fairy Tales , since 1996 Vice President of the Southeast European Society and since 2002 President of the Herder Research Council . In addition, he is editor of the Munich articles on intercultural communication and the journal Ethnologia Balkanica .
