Klaus Rother (doctor)

Klaus Rother (born March 1, 1926 in Wittstock / Dosse ; † January 16, 2016 ) was a German physician, immunologist and serologist.

Life

In the war days of 1944, Rother, son of the bookseller Oswald and Hedwig, born Rendel, graduated from high school in Wittstock / Dosse. He studied medicine in Mainz, Berlin and Freiburg. In Freiburg he was active in the Corps Rhenania . With a thesis on inflammation of the renal pelvis, he was promoted to Dr. med. doctorate and taught as a private lecturer at the University of Freiburg. From 1957 to 1959 and 1961 to 1968 he and his wife Ursula Rother , a professor of immunology, were involved in research projects with Leon and Pillemer in Cleveland in the USA. He was initially visiting professor and from 1963 Associate Professor of Pathology at New York University School of Medicine . After his return in 1967/68 he initially worked at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg.

In 1971 he was offered a professorship for general immunology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . The Institute for Immunology he founded at the Heidelberg University Hospital combined immunohematology with modern immunology and, with over 200 employees, was a leading institute on an international level. He was Vice Dean (1972–1979), Vice Rector (1980–1982) of Heidelberg University and Member of the Board of Heidelberg University Hospital (1986–1989). He was visiting professor in Adelaide (Australia), Wuhan (China) and Sao Paulo (Brazil). In 1994 he retired.

Rother was for many years President of the German Society for Immunology. He was a member of numerous organizations, including the Robert Koch Foundation. He himself was the founder of the Bernd Rendel Foundation in the DSZ German Foundation Center and Donors Association.
