Archaeological investigation area with remains of the Klein-Hemmingen desert, 2014

Small Hemmingen is a desolate fallen settlement from the period of the Middle Ages in the district of Hemmingen-Westerfeld in Hemmingen . A small area of the settlement, which existed around the 15th century, was uncovered in 2014 during archaeological investigations near the Carl Friedrich Gauß School .

Location and history

Klein-Hemmingen was located on a flood-free area on the western edge of the Leineaue, which flows through the Leine in a south-north direction. The settlement area was surrounded by the Seniebach in the east and north . The size of the settlement and its extent to the west are not yet known.

In historical sources, Klein-Hemmingen is named as Luttiken Hemmye and minori Hemie in the 14th century . Since no later mention is known, it is now assumed that the settlement was abandoned by the residents during the 15th century and fell desolate. It has been assumed since the late 1980s that Klein-Hemmingen was located in the vicinity of today's Carl Friedrich Gauß School. This assumption was based on medieval finds in this area and on the results of field name research .

excavation

In 2014, earthworks began on a former field near the Carl Friedrich Gauß School to build a turning loop for buses. Remnants of an earlier settlement were discovered in the ground, which led to archaeological investigations on an area of around 3000 m². In places made excavations there were settlement pits , post holes , pit houses , ditches and paths. Building structures could not be recognized at first due to the large number of partly overlapping findings .

The excavation was completed in autumn 2014. Based on the found pottery shards made of clay, the time when the settlement was established can be dated to around the year 900 AD. The large number of archaeological findings as well as their spatial overlaps indicate a long and intensive use of the settlement. Since it is mentioned once in a written source in the 14th century, it is assumed that Klein-Hemmingen existed between the 10th and 15th centuries.

At the end of 2016, the Hanover region and the Hemmingen local group of the Lower Saxony Heimatbund set up an information board at the Klein-Hemmingen site that provides information about the history of the settlement.
