The Kleinbahn-AG Tharau – Kreuzburg was founded on July 3, 1907 by the Prussian state, the province of East Prussia and the district of Preußisch Eylau . On July 26, 1908, it opened a standard-gauge small railway that started from Tharau station on the Königsberg - Rastenburg state railway line, which had been built by the East Prussian Southern Railway . Tharau train station was in the middle of the village of Wittenberg . The new route led in a south-westerly direction to the small town of Kreuzburg (formerly Creuzburg) in the Natangen countryside . The local railway administration was also based here.

The Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in Königsberg operated the 14 km long route for which two steam locomotives, four passenger cars and six freight cars were available. In 1939 four pairs of trains ran daily.

On January 29, 1945, the railway was largely destroyed when the city of Kreuzburg was conquered and was not rebuilt afterwards.

Omnibus operation

Since October 1, 1930, the railway also had a bus service. In 1939 two vehicles were used on the Königsberg - Schrombehnen - Rositten and Preußisch Eylau - Landsberg - Bartenstein lines .
