occupation

Little Miracles in Athens or Akadimia Platonos ( Greek Ακαδημία Πλάτωνος ) is a film directed by Filippos Tsitos in Germany and Greece in 2009 . The originally intended title was: De tha ginis ellinas pote, Alvane ... ( Greek Δεν θα γίνεις Έλληνας ποτέ, Αλβανέ ... , "You will never be a Greek, Albanian ...").

The film was shot as a co-production by ZDF and ARTE in Greek and Albanian. It officially opened in German cinemas on July 22, 2010.

environment

The film takes place at a quiet intersection in the Akadimia Platonos district of Athens . Like many districts close to the center, this one is also characterized by very small apartment buildings from the post-war period, which are mainly inhabited by foreigners after the old residents have moved away and which are falling into disrepair. The remaining mostly poor residents feel like losers of society.

action

The shopkeeper Stavros spends the days sitting idly with his friends in front of his shabby shop in Athens' Akadimia Platonos district. When Albanian construction workers start to erect a monument for “intercultural solidarity” on behalf of the city, this meets with resistance from xenophobic friends. The Chinese, who are opening up a shop for Italian designer fashion across from Stavros' shop with frightening diligence and who seem to be growing in number, also frighten the Greeks. They gossip about the Albanians and the Chinese and have fun with the dog "Patriot" that one of them trained to bark at all Albanians.

Stavros' half demented mother believes she recognizes the Albanian Marengelen as her lost son. The fact that his mother suddenly speaks fluent Albanian irritates Stavros as much as the patriot who is now barking at him.

The question of how much Albanian there is in himself throws his life out of balance and also shakes his friends' worldview.

Reviews

  • “Small miracles in Athens does not try to capture the soul of a people as a whole; in a microcosm located in a tiny space in the heart of this metropolis, however, a study of the nature of the true Greek man is taking place ... If a film manages to calmly formulate such great truths, full of irony and at times Sarcasm constructs a microcosm that contains everything that could be discovered on a large scale, then you actually have a gem in front of you. .. seldom before has such an inconspicuous film come up with so much charm. ” Dimitrios Athanassiou on moviemaze.de
  • “He succeeds in doing something completely different: with a small, eccentric and very lovable film to draw attention to a problem that has still been hushed up. Small miracles in Athens triggered a debate about intercultural difficulties in today's Greece and socially mediated xenophobia. ” Till Kadritzke on critic.de
  • “So it's no wonder that you can enjoy this film in many ways: Superficially as a light comedy that only turns out to be a razor-sharp look at Greek society and a fine parable of prejudices and the difficulties of everyday coexistence on a second and third glance. “ Joachim Kurz on kino-zeit.de

Awards

The film received the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the 62nd Locarno Film Festival . The main actor Antonis Kafetzopoulos received the prize for the best actor from the international jury , the youth jury of the festival recognized the film as the third best work.

The film was nominated for the European Parliament's 2010 LUX Film Prize and made it to the finals of the three best films.
