Little Wummsee |
The Große Wummsee lies in the north of Brandenburg directly on the border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , which runs along the northern shore of the lake. The lake has an area of 144 hectares and is up to 35 meters deep. The great depth of view of the nutrient-poor and very clear lake allows aquatic plants to grow even at a depth of 13 meters.
The Große Wummsee lies in a terminal moraine landscape with steep banks and was formed from numerous dead ice basins, which can still be seen today on the strongly structured shoreline.
The area of the Great Wummsees was together with the Twernsee and in siltation comprehended little Wummsee 1967 Nature Reserve Wumm- and Twernsee explained. The name of the lake is derived from the former Slavic settlement Wumsow on the south bank of the lake. In the 18th century there was a glassworks on the southeast bank, at the transition to Kapellensee , which was called Grünhütte because it produced green glass. Production in the hut ceased in 1889. There is still a small settlement on the site. In the north-west of the lake there are two larger islands, Großer and Kleiner Horst . There is also a smaller island in the east (also called a basket of flowers). On the west bank of the lake is the Maronstein, a memorial stone for chief forester I. Maron.
