The Twernsee lies in the north of Brandenburg directly on the border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , which runs along the northern shore of the lake. The lake has an area of 63 hectares and is up to 32 meters deep.
The Twernsee located in a moraine landscape with steep banks and was formed from numerous Toteiskesseln what shows up today the heavily indented shoreline, some of its bays are in silting realized. The Twernsee can be seen as the source lake of the Rhins , which flows from here over the Rochowsee , Giesenschlagsee , Zootzensee and Tietzowsee into the Schlabornsee .
The Twernsee area, together with the Großer Wummsee and the Kleiner Wummsee, was declared a nature reserve Wumm and Twernsee in 1967 .
