Nikolaus Heiss

Nikolaus Heiss (* 1943 in Bleicherode ) is a German architect and monument conservator .

Live and act

Nikolaus Heiss came to Darmstadt in 1948 . After graduating from high school , he studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt and then worked as a freelance architect. The focus of his work was on the construction of residential houses, the renovation of village centers and historical buildings.

From 1981 to 2010 he was head of the lower monument protection authority of the city of Darmstadt and chairman of the association Friends of Mathildenhöhe . He is currently Deputy Chair. He also worked on the municipal monument advisory board and on the municipal commission for the application of the Mathildenhöhe as a world heritage site .

Heiss was involved in various major projects in Darmstadt, including the renovation of the Art Nouveau bath , the reconstruction of the main train station , the renovation of the Kranichstein hunting lodge , the rescue of the remains of the former Liberal Synagogue, the renovation of the Hessian State Museum and the reconstruction and renovation of the Mathildenhöhe .

From 2006 to 2009, Heiss had lectureships for architecture and photography in the history department of the Technical University of Darmstadt and a lectureship for monument preservation at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern .

Honors

In November 2016, Heiss received the bronze plaque of merit from the city of Darmstadt.
