Lifting the F 125 for turning

The Kleinschnittger F 125 was a small roadster that Kleinschnittger GmbH built by the designer Paul Kleinschnittger from 1950 to 1957. It had a 1-cylinder two-stroke engine and weighed 150 kg when ready to drive. Around 2000 F 125 small cut machines were sold in Germany; the first left the Arnsberg plant on April 25, 1950 after a development period of nine months . The "F" in the type designation stood for front-wheel drive , the "125" for the displacement. The logo showed the prototype Kleinschnittger 98 stylized and with wings .

engine and gears

The engine of the mini car was a wind-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine from ILO with a displacement of 123 cm³ , which was installed transversely in front of the front axle . The engine output rose in the course of the construction period from an initial 4.5 HP to 5.5 HP up to 6 HP at 5500 rpm from 1953 after the change from cross-flow to reverse scavenging . A three-speed gearbox with ratchet gears and a multi-plate clutch were integrated into the motor housing. Through a chain and instead of an expensive gear differential gear each have a clamping rollers freewheeling per wheel he drove to the front wheels via drive shafts. Reverse gear was not intended and also not possible because of the freewheels. If necessary, the light vehicle was lifted and turned to turn. The engine was started with a cable pull in order to save the weight of the electric starter and the battery, which were available at an additional cost. The gear lever was on the right under the steering wheel.

Chassis and body

The car had a central tubular frame , the chassis consisted of pushed longitudinal arms at the front and drawn longitudinal arms at the rear. This included adjustable rubber band suspension and rack and pinion steering . The drum brakes on all four wheels with a braking area of 150 cm² were operated mechanically.

A two-seater open aluminum body was screwed onto the frame. The Kleinschnittger had no doors. A large windshield and an attachable folding top served as weather protection. The tank with a capacity of about 7.5 liters was installed above the front axle. So the car didn't need a fuel pump . According to earlier advertising, the Kleinschnittger had a trunk in the rear with “space for a spare wheel as well as travel and weekend luggage”. From 1953 the spare wheel was placed on the outside of the rear, but even then there was actually only a capacity of 24 liters available for luggage. The turn signals instead of the order in 1950 were unusually common in the early days of the small Schnittgers Winker as direction indicators.

The equipment of the small car included a white spring-spoke steering wheel and the steering wheel gearshift, as well as a clock in the luxury version.

Others

In its time, the Kleinschnittger F 125 was considered to be very safe to drive, despite its narrow wheels (tire size 20 × 2.25) and, for its small engine, to be fast. With 6 hp it reached a top speed of 70 km / h; 50–55 km / h were given as cruising speed. It accelerated from zero to 60 km / h in 16.5 seconds. Around 30 years later, however, the driving behavior was described as follows, among other things: “Even more than the Goggomobil , the Kleinschnittger is a piece of sports equipment that craves courageous cornering technology. The fabulously smooth-running rack and pinion steering can be swirled from stop to stop in no time at all. ”It was also said that he had the ability“ to bite mercilessly into tram rails. ”

The little car was also used in motorsport. At the Lisbon – Madrid rally in August 1953, a small-cut F 125 took second place behind a Porsche 356 in the class up to 1100 cc. Such sports activities not only aroused attention, but also provided knowledge for further development. For example, the engine received three vibration dampers ( silentblocs ) to avoid the annoying tightening of the fastening screws, the body was reinforced in the area of the entrance and the flexible disks of the drive shafts were made of a more durable material.

The Kleinschnittger was an inexpensive vehicle. At the start of production it cost DM 1995 (adjusted for inflation to around EUR 5,600  ) and at the end of the seven-year construction period it cost  DM 2,450 (around EUR 6,000). With these prices, Kleinschnittger addressed two-wheelers in particular (1952: NSU Max 1990 DM) and wrote in the operating instructions: "Please consider this vehicle as a scooter or motorcycle in the lower classes, but on 4 wheels ... Our vehicle is not a replacement for a fully-fledged automobile, but should only move the motorcyclist more safely on 4 wheels and at the same time offer him protection against wind and weather. ”
