Kleinstadtsünder is a German silent film comedy from 1927 with Asta Nielsen in the leading role.

action

The innkeeper couple Karchow live in a small town. August Karchow is a sedate, weird owl, his aging wife Selma was once a cabaret singer who has long since passed her prime. The couple lives primarily on an annuity that was intended for their long-dead grandfather Meiseken. But now there are problems, because the generous donor of the pension payments, a well-heeled leather goods dealer from Berlin, has become popular in the small town. So a grandpa is essential! The arable citizen Rohde, who has an uncle who could splendidly play an old man, should help .

The Berlin guest comes and, to the great misfortune of Mr and Mrs Karchow, falls in love with the small town landlady, which means that he intends to extend his stay here indefinitely. This in turn brings Rohde on the scene, who now begins to blackmail the Karchows together with his daughter Hedwig. The whole building of lies collapses when the somewhat idiotic Assessor Arthur, a regular guest in the Karchow'schen Pinte, gossips. A violent marital row ensues, whereupon August and Selma divorce. Selma then catches the single leather dealer who seems to be an ideal match for her. As his wife, she leaves the sleepy small town café in a chic car.

Reviews

“The director was not lacking in funny ideas. Asta Nielsen plays the funny character of the innkeeper in this film. Really, she can be funny, has excellent moments when she rides a carousel in a sweet intoxication and listens to the songs of the city dweller in love. "
