The Monastery Balerne (Balerna) is a former Cistercian abbey in the French Jura department of the Franche-Comté region . The monastery is located in the municipality of Mont-sur-Monnet about six kilometers southeast of Champagnole .
history
The monastery was founded around 1107 as a Benedictine settlement on land donated by the Lords of Monnet and joined the Cistercian order in 1136 as the daughter of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The first abbot was Burchard. The monastery quickly acquired extensive property with the Grangien Rubea Aqua, Ardon, Le Rotour, Loulle, Saffloz, Songeson, Lons-le-Saunier (salt extraction) and Montorge, as well as cellars in Salins, Cuiseaux and Glénon. The monastery succeeded in founding a subsidiary ( Kloster Buillon ). At the beginning of the 15th century the monastery had more than thirty monks. In 1486 it was entrusted with the visitation of the Savoy and Swiss monasteries of the order. In 1755 the church and the monastery buildings were destroyed by fire, but rebuilt on a smaller scale. During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed in 1791. The monastery buildings, including the church consecrated in 1147, were largely demolished.
Buildings and plant
