The Beaugerais Monastery (Notre-Dame de Beaugerais; Baugeseium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Loché-sur-Indrois in the Indre-et-Loire department , Center-Val de Loire region , in France , around 18 km south-east of Loches .

history

The monastery, founded around 1153 by four knights who set out on the crusade for regular canons , joined the Cistercian order in 1172 as the daughter of Le Loroux monastery in the filiation of Cîteaux . During the French Revolution , the monastery came to an end in 1791.

Buildings and plant

The nave of the monastery church, consecrated in 1184 and rebuilt in 1204, has been preserved. The choir (16th century) is in ruins. Remnants of a gallery in the cloister are still present. The buildings have been protected as a monument historique since 1938 .
