The Le Loroux Monastery (Oratory; Le Louroux) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Vernantes in the Maine-et-Loire department , Pays de la Loire region , in France , around 22 km northeast of Saumur .
history
The monastery was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1115 and joined the Cistercian order in 1121 at the instigation of Fulko V of Anjou and his wife Erembuge de la Flèche as the daughter of Cîteaux monastery. It was the mother monastery of Kloster Pontron , Monastery Bellebranche , Monastery Beaugerais and after the victory of the house Anjou on the Hohenstaufen of the convent of Santa Maria della Vittoria in L'Aquila in Italy . The abbey was fortified in the 14th century. In the 16th century, the richly equipped monastery fell into Kommende . It was disbanded in 1791 during the French Revolution . In the 19th century, after part of the buildings collapsed, a Neo-Renaissance style castle was built.
