Santa Maria della Vittoria Monastery was a Cistercian abbey in Abruzzo , Italy . It was about 2 km east of Scurcola Marsicana in the Marsica landscape near Avezzano in the province of L'Aquila on the Salto river .

history

The monastery was donated by Charles I of Anjou in 1274 in memory of the victory over Konradin von Hohenstaufen in the battle of Tagliacozzo in 1268 . Besides the monastery of Santa Maria di Real Valle , it was the second monastery founded in memory of the victory of the House of Anjou. The mother monastery became the monastery Le Loroux in France; thus the monastery belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . However, the abbey soon became subordinate to the monastery of Santa Maria di Real Valle in Campania , founded in 1273 . It was probably settled from France in 1277. The construction was probably completed in 1282. In 1373 Cistercians are still recorded in Santa Maria della Vittoria. However, they later had to leave the monastery when the Aragonese took over the land and Benedictine monks followed them. In the 16th century the monastery was destroyed by an earthquake. The statue of the Madonna, donated by Charles I, was recovered from the ruins of the monastery in 1525 and brought to the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Scurcola Marsicana.

Plant and buildings

Only ruins of the monastery have survived, which should not allow the reconstruction of the ground plan. Two portals were moved to neighboring churches.
