The Cistercian Abbey Bonlieu (Loire) was 1199-1790 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Sainte-Agathe-la-Bouteresse in the Loire department , 14 kilometers west of Feurs in France.

history

The wife of Guigues II (Forez) founded the nuns' priory Bonlieu in 1199, which was settled by the Cistercian abbey of Bellecombe and elevated to an abbey in 1259 . The monastery became the burial place of the d'Urfé family , whose ancestral home is nearby and who was one of its outstanding benefactors. The monastery burned down in the 14th century, 1682 and 1711 and was never fully rebuilt. In 1790, the French Revolution led to the closure and most of the buildings being dismantled. The remaining remains have been a listed building since 1952.

Buildings and plant

The church from the 14th century, which was later rebuilt inside, is - unique for the area - made of brick. The groin-vaulted four-bay nave with lancet windows has two transepts that are connected to the central nave via pointed arcades. Two side absiden are arranged at an angle to the choir.
