The Chalivoy Monastery (Notre-Dame de Chalivoy; Callovium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Herry in the Cher department , Center-Val de Loire region , in France . It was about 15 km southeast of Sancerre on the Vauvise .
history
The monastery was founded in 1133 by the Archbishop of Bourges , Vulgrin, on a foundation by Guifroy de Magny at the Hermitage of Font-Just, but moved to its new location as early as 1138, and became a subsidiary of Bourras Monastery from the filiation of the Pontigny Primary Abbey to the Cistercian Order. The abbey was destroyed in 1544 and 1562, but subsequently rebuilt, the church not until 1777. The abbey came to an end in 1791 during the French Revolution .
Buildings and plant
The monastery church is said to have been one of the largest in the Bourges diocese. A monastery wing from the 18th century, which was probably rebuilt in the 19th century, and two communs as well as the round base of a pigeon house from the 16th century are preserved. Today there is a castle on the monastery grounds.
