Himmelau Abbey (Gelnhausen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Himmelau monastery was a Benedictine and Cistercian monastery in Gelnhausen in Hesse from 1313 to 1561 . It should not be confused with the monastery of the same name of the Discalced Carmelite Sisters in Sankt Michael im Lavanttal in Austria .

history

Siegfried von Gelnhausen , Bishop of Chur , who came from a Gelnhausen patrician family, founded a nunnery in his homeland, which was confirmed as Ubenhausen Monastery by Emperor Heinrich VII in 1313 , first appeared in 1319 under the name Himmelau and which was known as the Cistercian monastery from 1323 . It was consecrated to Saints Lucius and Florinus (after Lucius von Chur and Florinus von Remüs ). It was lifted in 1537, but the nuns were allowed to stay at the site. When it was only inhabited by the abbess and two nuns in 1561, it was abandoned. The buildings fell to the city in 1562 and were demolished in 1777. Today there is still a well house (private). The street names Himmelauer Straße and Am Kloster are reminiscent of the former monastery.
