The monastery La Garde-Dieu (Garda Dei) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Mirabel in the Tarn-et-Garonne department , Occitania region , in France , around 21 kilometers north of Montauban .
history
The monastery was founded as a subsidiary of Obazine Monastery in Essarnat, but was moved to the banks of the Petit Lembous in 1150 . It thus belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . The monastery shelter the nuns priory of Fontmoulhes at Gourdon in the Lot , near which is grange of Saint-Martin-le-Desarmat was. The pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame-des-Misères on the height above the monastery was built by the mother monastery Obazine. In 1567 the monastery was sacked by the Huguenots . Around 1710, the Bishop of Cahors , Henri de Bricqueville de la Luzerne, had the monastery buildings rebuilt as Commendatar Abbot. During the French Revolution , the monastery came to an end in 1791. From 1864 to 1874 the monastery was again populated by Cistercians from Sénanque . It was then sold for demolition. In 1897 a fire caused great damage and in 1908 the vaults of the chapter house and the cloister were destroyed in order to sell the capitals . The monastery subsequently became a farm.
Buildings and plant
Remnants of the facility, including a pigeon house ( Monument historique since 1950), have been preserved on the farm.
