The Monastery of La Prée (Pratea; Notre-Dame de la Prée) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Ségry in the Indre department , Center-Val de Loire region , in France , around 12 km southeast of Issoudun in the Arnon valley .

history

The monastery founded in 1128, 1141 or 1145 (the details differ, but mostly mention 1141) was a subsidiary of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The monastery, which owned 22 domains and three mills, flourished quickly, thanks in part to the use of the surrounding forests and quarries. The Boidabert Priory was later attached to the monastery . The monastery was looted during the Hundred Years War . As a result it fell into the future . In the 17th century, the west wing was partially destroyed by fire. During the French Revolution , the monastery came to an end in 1791 and became privately owned. In 1954 it was given to the Petits frères des Pauvres , who run a retirement home in the Hôtellerie (former monastery mill). The abbot's house has served as a residence for artists since 1991 and is looked after by the Pour Que l'Esprit Vive association, which also organizes a music festival.

Buildings and plant

The church left in 1818. Parts of the cloister , the abbot's house as the southern end of the cloister, and the hotel business have been preserved. The west wing of the cloister is built into it, each with four arcades under a large arch. The chapter house from the 12th century with two octagonal pillars and the sacristy and dormitory on the upper floor in the east wing of the complex also stand . Finally, two round corner towers have been preserved in the building line.
