The La Valette Monastery (Valleta, Vallis laeta) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Auriac in the Corrèze department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France , around 35 km northeast of Argentat near the village of Spontour in a bend in the Dordogne . The monastery complex sank in the Dordogne reservoir ( Barrage du Chastang ) in 1951 .

history

Probably the 1,143 donated by Bégon de SCORAILLES Benedictine joined in 1147 as a daughter monastery of Kloster Obazine the Cistercian order and was thus one of filiation of Cîteaux Abbey . The monastery had an important grangie in Broc, the so-called "Abbaye de Broc" (municipality Menet , Département Cantal ), where cattle was raised and the abbots of the monastery temporarily resided. The monastery was later moved to Laval. In 1574 it was looted and burned down. During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed in 1791.

Buildings and plant

The Romanesque gate was moved to Auriac in 1951 and re-erected there. The Grangie in Broc is called "site bien cistercien" by Peugniez.
