history

The monastic family of Bethlehem originated in France in 1950 and has its focus to this day in the French-speaking area. In 1991, Bishop Josef Homeyer invited the sisters to found a convent in the Hildesheim diocese and provided them with a large-scale villa with associated buildings in Neuenkirchen -Hertel in the Lüneburg Heath . Therefore the new branch of the order was named Marienheide.

During the renovation and refurbishment work, however, it became apparent that the place did not offer sufficient conditions for the Carthusian spirituality of strict seclusion, and the sisters began looking for a more suitable settlement. This was finally found in 2000 in the abandoned little village of Wollstein. With the support of the Diocese of Fulda , the Bonifatiuswerk and many individual donors, the new monastery with the hermitages of the twelve sisters, the community and guest facilities and the stable church (" Bethlehem "), which was opened in 2008 by Bishop Heinz Josef Algermissen , has been built in the historic buildings was consecrated .
