former Marienthal monastery

The Monastery Marienthal was 1291-1539 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Eckartsberga in Saxony-Anhalt . It is not to be confused with numerous monasteries of the same name .

history

Bruno von Langenbogen , Bishop of Naumburg founded the nunnery Marienthal (also: Mergental ) in 1291 near the town of Eckartsberga (today not far from the border with Thuringia ). In 1525 the Cistercian sisters left the monastery. In 1535 it was only inhabited by a nun and officially closed in 1539. In the hands of several owners, the buildings fell into disrepair. Kurt von Wilmowsky became the owner of the castle, which was built not far from in 1730, in 1893 and had a new complex with a castle built by the architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg in 1910 . Marienthal Castle is now a wellness hotel. There are no remains of the actual monastery.
