The Monastery of Peyrouse (Petrosa; Peïro rousso) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Saint-Saud-Lacoussière in the Dordogne department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France . The monastery is located around 20 km east of Nontron on the Queue-d'Âne stream , a right tributary of the Côle .
history
The convent was built in 1153 near an "old Abbey" (the present hamlet of Vieille Abbaye founded) and in 1147 as a daughter house of Branch Clairvaux consecrated. It is said to have been the last one that Bernhard von Clairvaux had an influence on before his death. At first it prospered, but soon got into an existential crisis. In 1559 it was sacked by the troops of Admiral Coligny , and the church and convent building suffered severe damage. Under Louis XV. the monastery was rebuilt. For years, the monks had a monopoly on the trade in the manganese ore found in the area . In 1793 the number of monks had dropped to three. During the French Revolution , the monastery fell into disrepair and was sold as a national property. At the end of the 19th century, the buildings were destroyed by fire and then abandoned. The ruins were subsequently demolished.
Buildings and plant
