The Benedictine monastery of Santa María de Obarra is a former monastery in the Aragonese Pyrenees . It lies in the valley of the river Isábena at the left bank of the district Calvera the community Beranuy the Comarca Ribagorza .

history

The monastery is first mentioned in a document in 874, but is said to go back to the time before the Moorish conquest (710). In the early 10th century, the monastery was reformed by Bernardo Unifredo of Ribagorza. It served as the burial place of the Counts of Ribagorza. In 1076 the previously independent monastery was subordinated to the monastery of San Victorián as a priory . The priory came to an end with the (re) establishment of the Barbastro diocese in 1571. The vaults collapsed in 1872. In 1931 the monastery was finally declared a Monumento Nacional ( Bien de Interés Cultural ). Reconstruction of the church began around 1960.

Buildings and plant

The existing, Lombard-influenced buildings probably go back to the 11th century. However, there are still remains from the Visigothic period (including the capitals of the portal and the altar hall). The three-aisled basilica church of Santa María without a transept has seven bays. The three semicircular apses are decorated with blind arch friezes, with deep niches on the main apse, and pilaster strips . A tower on the south wall was only built up to a height of three meters. To the north of the church, the convent buildings have been preserved as ruins. The nearby small single-nave church of San Pablo from the 12th century with a barrel vault also belonged to the monastery .
