The Chapel of San Pablo of the former Benedictine monastery of Santa María de Obarra in Calvera , a district of the municipality of Beranuy (formerly Veracruz), in the province of Huesca of the Spanish autonomous community of Aragón , was built in the 12th century. The chapel dedicated to the Apostle Paul is only a few meters away from the monastery church of Santa María and was probably used by pilgrims and travelers who did not have access to the monastery. In 1931 the chapel was declared a protected monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) together with the monastery church and the remains of the palace of the prior .

architecture

apse

The chapel is regularly hewn building stones erected and has a covered with stone slabs gable roof . The interior consists of a single nave , which is covered by a barrel vault, and a choir with a semicircular apse covered by a dome, raised by two steps . High round arches lead from the nave to the choir and from the choir to the apse. A narrow, loopholed window has been cut into the apse. The nave is also broken up by two narrow arched windows on the south side. A portal framed by an archivolt opens in the west facade . Above the keystone of the portal arch, a relief is embedded in the wall, on which a circle is depicted with the Christ monogram and the letters Alpha and Omega and on which red paint remains can be seen in places. Another narrow window is cut into the gable of the facade. Today all windows are closed with alabaster panes.
