Groot Brakrivier or Groot-Brakrivier ( English Great Brak River ) is a South African place in the municipality of Mossel Bay , Garden Route District in the Western Cape Province . It is located around 24 kilometers east of Mossel Bay by road . In 2011 Groot Brakrivier had 10,619 inhabitants in 3,148 households.

The place name of Groot Brakrivier, founded in 1859, is derived from the river of the same name, which flows into the Indian Ocean here . It means brackish or salty water.
The place is on the coast of Mossel Bay (sea bay) and in the Garden Route area between the cities of Mossel Bay and George . It developed from several small settlements on both sides of the mouth of the Great Brak River. The main districts of Groot Brakrivier are: Bergsig , Botha Strand , Glentana , Greenhaven , Groot Brakrivier , Outeniqua Strand , Southern Cross (Suiderkruis), The Island and Wolwedans .
Attractions
As a tourist attraction, historical trains run on the George – Mossel Bay railway line , which has a train station in Groot Brakrivier and a tunnel in the Glentana district .
The former school, built in 1902, now houses the Great Brak River Museum and the information center. It tells about the local history and what influence the Searle family, who come from the English county of Surrey , has had on local development through their leather processing and the revitalization of trade since the late 1850s. The family grave is also located at the Searle Memorial Church . There is also information about the life of the indigenous Khoisan and about the use of water power.
A scenic attraction is the estuary of the Great Brak River in the center of the village, where there are several sandbanks and several houses stand on one. Hence this district is named as The Island . The island can be reached via a single-lane road bridge.

Groot Brakrivier can be reached by land via the N2 national road , which has been developed as a motorway here. The regional road R102 runs from Mossel Bay almost parallel to the motorway and coast. After crossing the Great Brak River, she turns a little inland to reach the neighboring city of George past George Airport . The railway line, which runs through the town and also near the coast, is mainly of touristic importance and in George has a connection to the line to Oudtshoorn .
